The Hevea Cup & Wellness Expo aims to improve health and social outcomes for communities across Papua New Guinea (PNG) by leveraging the popularity of rugby to engage the community in health education and wellness activities.
The 2023 Hevea Cup & Wellness Expo, held over two days in Port Moresby, combined a Rugby League 9s tournament featuring 32 teams (12 men's, 12 women's, 4 Youth Boys and 4 Youth Girls) with a wellness expo showcasing 23 exhibiting organizations focused on critical health and social issues.
A total of 2,120 attendees participated, with a notable emphasis on engaging the nation's youth. On the first day, access was exclusively granted to secondary school students until 3 PM, creating a safe space for peer learning and empowerment within this pivotal demographic. This strategic shift aimed to address PNG's pressing health and social challenges more effectively by targeting the younger generation.
